Bread and Roses

詞: james oppenheim 曲: mimi farina 唱: judy collins, joan baez, mimi farina baez

As we come marching, marching, in the beauty of the day,
A million darkened kitchens, a thousand mill lofts grey,
Are touched with all the radiance that a sudden sun discloses
For the people hear us singing,
“Bread and roses, bread and roses!"

As we come marching, marching, we battle too for men
For they are women’s children and we mother them again.
Our lives shall not be sweated from birth until life closes,
Hearts can starve as well as bodies,
“Give us bread and give us roses!"

As we come marching, marching, unnumbered women dead
Go crying through our city their ancient song of bread.
Small art and love and beauty their drudging spirits knew-
Yes, it is bread that we fight for,
But we fight for roses too!

As we come marching, marching, we bring the greater day,
The rising of the women is arising all the ways!
No more the drudge and idler, ten that toil where one reposes,
But a sharing of life’s glories,
“Bread and roses, bread and roses!"

三八婦女節的起源 the beginning of international women’s day

back in the 19th century, more and more factories were set up because of the technical advancement. a lot of bosses in europe and the united states, took advantage of the social inequality between men and women, with the women usually being paid less, and employed lots and lots of women and child labours, who were made to work for 16 to 17 hours daily, in bad working conditions. their lives were just like machines.

on 8 mar 1857, seamstress and women tailor of factories in new york, united states took to the street, and protest for the bad working condition and low wage. but they were rounded up and dispersed by the police. however, this protest facilitated women’s organising and built their own union, by the women, for the women!

in the following years, similar protests happened on march 8th yearly. in 1908, about 15,000 women again took to the street in new york and demanded for, shorter working hours; equal pay between men and women; and voting rights for women. and called out the slogan of “bread and roses", which symbolised economic assurance and dignity. right before the the 1st world war, women in europe took to the street on 3 march 1913, and said no to war through peaceful demonstrations. on 8 march 1917, women of russia went on strike, and demand for “bread and peace". 4 days later, the tsar was forced to resign, and the provisional government announced the granting of voting right for women.

ok now, grassroots women made history. today in the 21st century, we shouldn’t let all their struggles and fights go to waste!
