=======================================================================

Yuli 加油!Stand with 姐姐!

We are coming from the art collective v artivist
We are here to support creative freedom and freedom of speech.

We want to point out another level of political repression other than the arrest and physical violence from the government.

Many migrant workers we know have very little time and space to explore other things in Hong Kong because their work has exhausted them. Once we had a workshop with migrant workers that lasted for six months. It is because they have only one day a week when they can take control over their time. During that day, they meet friends, family, rest and take care of all their personal matters.

To create is to squeeze time from this already packed schedule. It is not because migrants domestic workers do not want to express themselves or they lack the capacity. Similarly, we have seen many grassroots in Hong Kong who have the same constraint.

That is why to have real democracy; we cannot separate politics from our everyday issues. How would it be easy to think about what it means by freedom or democracy in a society where everyone is overwork?

Of course, if a person will lose his/her job and be deported for saying something that the government dislike, this is apparent political repression. Our collaborations with migrant workers and Yuli have taught us one thing. Labour right is part of how we define freedom and democracy. Workers rights are human rights. They cannot be excluded from freedom of speech.

CIC is a real issue. If we want a Hong Kong that respect human right principles and be democratic, under no circumstances, we can allow a place like CIC to exist. It might not be directly linked to our immediate struggle, but if we recognise that no one in this world can enjoy more freedom than others, we have to oppose those inhumane practises in CIC.

We all know and appreciate Yuli’ courage. To support us in Hong Kong requires much courage since there might be a severe consequence. In reverse, when Hong Kong people show solidarity to support their cause for rights, or support someone as brave as Yuli, we only need to take some time, and perhaps it does not require much courage. What is equality of freedom of speech? We need to think more.
